Birmingham, 9th June, 2011. United National Bank (UNB) has been serving the community in Birmingham for nearly half a century. From its humble beginnings in the 1960’s (as National Bank) and then transformation to UNB in 2001, Birmingham has been a focal point of operations for UNB.

UNB continued commitment to Birmingham and the community is yet again deepened as UNB has further invested in the Sales and Service Centre at Birmingham located at Stratford Road. The event was marked by a ribbon cutting ceremony at which Dr. Saeed Khan Mohmand, Consul General, Consulate of Pakistan at Birmingham, was the chief guest. Dr Mohmand congratulated UNB at this occasion.

UNB commitment to Birmingham has increased substantially in the last few years. UNB has invested by moving its centralised operations department to Birmingham and has also moved their training and development department here. This refurbishment has made the UNB Sales and Service Centre more convenient and comfortable for its customers and employees.

United National Bank’s principal activities are to provide retail banking products through its sales and service network in major cities in the UK, including Birmingham, London, Ilford Manchester, Bradford, and Glasgow. UNB provides easy remittance facilities to Pakistan and elsewhere, conventional and islamic banking, mortgages and other retail and commercial banking facilities.

London 1st Feb, 2010. UNB launched their Islamic deposit product and with this has taken a lead in bringing a suit of Islamic deposit products to the individuals and corporate in the UK. These are deposit products are 90 Days Notice Deposit account and Fixed Term Deposits for 6months and 1 year and are based on Mudarba structure, a permitted Shari’ah mode. These products bring to the market an alternative option for their clients who are committed to Islamic way of life and are determined to conduct their economic activities in accordance with the tenets of Islamic Shari’ah. The Islamic Products are also very attractive to the general public by virtue of their product features and benefits.

Mr. Mansoor Ali Khan CEO highlighted that London has emerged as a global hub for Islamic finance and there has a huge market potential available in UK market for Islamic products. He further illuminated that they are focusing on South Asian Muslim community and have set them as their initial target market for these products. Predominantly over a 1 million people are clustered in all across the UK and the philosophy behind launching these products is a belief that savings play a vital role in managing future needs. The people generally try to save a portion of their income with a view to protecting themselves from future financial hardship and also to enhance their earnings for their own benefit and the benefit of their family. Most of the Muslim community do not believe in accepting interest (ribah) as it is prohibited in Islam therefore keep their saving in current accounts or in the shape of cash at home or in their lockers.

We at United National bank, intend to provide them with an alternative solution based on purely “Halal” profit with no fear of interest.

Mr. Atif Bukhari, Board Director of United National Bank Ltd flew in especially from Karachi for the launch of the Islamic Deposit Product. Speaking to the press on the occasion he informed that UNB was already offering Ijara mortgages to its customers and has some booked a sizeable portfolio and is currently financed to comply with Shari’ah rules, by the bank’s own capital. The deposits generated through these Islamic products will be utilized in the same bank’s existing Ijara mortgage product. By offering these products, UNB has taken the lead to offer a complete Shari’ah Compliant solution where the customer will have peace of mind that their money y has been invested in Shari’ah Compliant Products and they are sharing profit not interest.

These Islamic accounts are capital protected via a shari’ah compliant methodology approved by the renowned shari’ah advisor and Shari’ah consultants. The profit on these accounts is not fixed and will be declared on a monthly basis based on the profit earned on the Islamic investments. However the actual profit will be shared as per agreed ratio on the due dates.

The proposed new Islamic deposit products will provide an avenue for UNB, with its branches strategically located in areas with large Muslim communities, to expand into this rapidly growing and potentially profitable subset of banking.
